The shadows on the ground are as important as the chair casting them. The chair is  cropped so that attention can be concentrated on lines, shapes and colours which, with  the cast shadows, combine into a pattern of horizontals, verticals and diagonals. This  pattern contrasts with the much more fluid and non-geometrical pattern of the paving  stones and whitewashed cement to create a coherent and structured pictorial  composition.
